AVID Training (Advancement via Individual Determination) - more than $180,000 over 5 years
Curricular Area: Across Subjects
Grant Focus: Professional Development
Schools: District Wide
Students at White Salmon Valley School District (WSVSD) will now receive access to Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), a nationally recognized program designed to support students in achieving college readiness and success.
The grant, funded by WSVEF, provides $180,000 to support AVID access in the district over 5 years. WSVSD teachers and staff will undergo specialized training to integrate AVID strategies into classrooms across all grade levels. The program fosters a school-wide culture of high expectations and academic excellence. AVID focuses on equipping students with critical thinking, collaboration, organization, and self-advocacy skills. It aims to inspire students to pursue higher education and career aspirations, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status.
As part of the program, participating students will benefit from:
● Structured Tutorials: Small-group sessions to support academic growth and problem-solving skills.
● College and Career Readiness Activities: Exposure to college campuses, guest speakers, and career exploration.
● WICOR Strategies: A proven framework focusing on Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading.
● Dedicated AVID Elective Classes: For targeted academic and personal support.
AVID is working on eliminating the educational opportunity gap with proven effectiveness such as a 90% college acceptance rate for students who apply to college and are four times more likely to graduate than their national peers.
